Andy Timmons Band - Plays Sgt. Pepper [2011]

Andy Timmons Band - Plays Sgt. Pepper [2011]

This is a tough one to review, and for obvious reasons too. How exactly does one approach the review of a COVER of one of the great rock albums? To answer that question you need first to answer the question, how does one dare to cover one of the great rock albums? The answer to the second question is spelled out in Andy's delivery of the songs. You just LOVE the album. It is not hard to hear the love and respect infusing each note that is played on this interpretation of the Beatles' masterpiece. It is an incredibly tasteful guitar instrumental album. So often instrumental rock (or shred as it were) is tarnished by "overplaying" by the guitarist in question. Not here. Each note has a purpose and a value on the recording. Even on songs like "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" where the temptation to completely break loose is overwhelming, Andy holds back to ensure that the song and not the guitarist is the focus. Andy's answer to the second question makes it a pleasure to answer the first. The beauty and originality of the songs are retained in these readings of them, but with enough of a modern rock guitar edge to make them fresh and unique. The Merle Travis ragtime guitar interpretation of "When I'm 64", peppered with some lovely country soloing, is just perfect and leaves me with a grin from ear to ear each time I listen to it. I would be remiss at this point to not mention 2 things about the guitar on this album. Firstly, the playing is sublime, and secondly, the tone is just awesome. Andy's guitar tones on the recording are great, and the post-production has preserved these very well! I recommend this album to fans of the Beatles, fans of instrumental guitar rock, and simply fans of quality rock music in general. Keep on rocking!
